Chapter 41

T he next day the girl and Alena went through the ship, checking systems and doing test flights to make sure all systems worked properly. There could be no glitches. They were relieved they did. The holographic system still didn't operate all the way, so they located the problem and retested it. A couple of other small issues cropped up, mainly in the wiring. Apparently, a few places incurred further damage from the firefight, and necessitated replacing the wiring. Everything appeared completely repaired finally. They sat down and discussed the download again from the last operation.

"I don't know our next move. If we wait until it comes, it's too late," said Alena.

"But we don't know how to disable it," said Alika.

The girl had been strangely quiet, but she finally spoke, "Disabling it involves another operation. We are missing several crucial elements. Time, the biggest one. We don't have it, and we're not the only ones. The others know it's running short as well."

"Speaking of time, I can't believe how late it got," said Alena as she noticed the display as they continued to analyze the download of the dispersement device.

"Yes, time slipped away, and we are no closer to an answer. We remain stuck."

"We'll study more of it tomorrow, you two. At least the ship is finally repaired."

"Yeah, tomorrow I suppose." The girl wondered how many more tomorrows lay ahead before the time ran out.

The girl stared out before her. She had known. Felt it. Hoped she was wrong. She closed her eyes at the image, but it did no good. It had come. All around her there was no denying its venomous touch, its destructive power unleashed upon all life on the surface. She looked at Alena and Alika as they both shook their head. They all knew it was coming, but they still were powerless to stop it. The others could not either. At least not before this. There was the sound of one in agony near her. A pain that could not be soothed, could not be helped, but only echoed seemingly endlessly on as the night shadows crept closer. It was only the beginning. The girl turned away. She could not look upon it, listen to the cries anymore. She dropped down overcome by the scene and wept.

Alena woke from a sound sleep, listening for a moment. Did she imagine it? No, it was crying coming from the girl's room. She was certain now. She got up and went to the girl's bedside. The girl's head went from side to side as she cried in her sleep. Alena realized the girl must be receiving a vision.

"Lights on," said Alena softly as the lights came on in the room.

Alena gently nudged the girl and spoke to her. "Come, awaken, you're safe. It's only one of the visions. I'm here beside you."

The girl opened her eyes and saw Alena. She responded by throwing her arms around Alena and weeping. Alena could do nothing but try to comfort the girl again as she did the previous evening.
